AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your content likely to be selected and cited when an AI system generates an answer to a question. Where SEO competes for a slot in a list of results, AEO competes for a sentence — or at least a named mention — inside the answer itself. That single difference, unit of success, is what the rest of this post is about: what the term means now, where it came from, and what it is not.

Why “answer engine” deserves its own term at all

A classic search engine’s job is to find and list. You type a query, it returns a ranked list of links, and the user does the reading and the choosing. The optimization discipline that fits that job — SEO — is scored in rankings and clicks.

An answer engine’s job is to synthesize. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google’s AI Overviews take a question, gather information from multiple sources, and produce a prose answer — often with a handful of citations attached. OpenAI’s own launch description of ChatGPT search, published in 2024, frames it exactly that way: “fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources” that you could “previously [get] by going to a search engine” (OpenAI, https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-search/). The user never sees a ranked list at all; they read a paragraph.

Once the deliverable changes from “a link in position 5” to “a claim inside a paragraph,” the inputs that matter change with it. That’s what the term AEO points at: the set of work that decides whether your content makes it into the paragraph.

Where the term came from

The honest version of the history, because the marketing version is sloppier than it needs to be:

  • The phrase predates the LLM era. “Answer engine optimization” was already in circulation in the voice-search era, when the industry was optimizing for featured snippets — the single highlighted answer box Google placed at the top of results. That early usage was narrower: optimize your page to win the snippet box.
  • In the LLM era the term was re-anchored. The snippet box is one surface; generated answers are another, and the inputs differ. Ahrefs is now the most visible commercial promoter of the re-anchored term — it runs a full AEO practice at https://ahrefs.com/aeo and its current explainer is titled “What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?” (verified live, 2026-10-20). But it is one vendor’s framing, not a standardization.
  • There is no single authoritative definition yet. Every vendor, paper and consultancy defines AEO slightly differently. That is normal for a term in its first few years of commercial use — “SEO” itself took decades to settle into a shared meaning. Which is why this post gives you a working definition instead of a dictionary entry.

The working definition, stated plainly: AEO is the work that makes your pages and claims (a) reachable by the systems that ground AI answers, (b) extractable as self-contained, current, specific passages, and (c) corroborated by third-party sources those answers already trust. Three conditions; all three must hold for a citation to happen, and a failure in any one of them is invisible to a rank tracker.

What AEO concretely means now: presence in generated answers

A useful way to see the difference is by the shape of the output:

  • SEO’s output is a URL in a results list. You can measure it with a position, and you can defend it with links, content and site quality.
  • AEO’s output is a sentence in a generated answer, with your brand named or a link attached. You measure it by asking the question in the surface and reading who was cited.

Two properties of the second output matter for the definition:

  1. It is per-question, not per-page. You don’t “rank” for AI answers; individual questions about your category — “best CRM for [vertical]”, “[competitor] vs [you]”, “[category] pricing” — each get an answer composed from whichever sources that composition pulls from. Profound’s study of roughly 700,000 ChatGPT conversations found that only about 18% of conversations triggered at least one web search, and cited conversations averaged ~6 unique citations (Profound, published February 2026, summarized in our what ChatGPT cites piece). Six slots, per answer.
  2. It is per-surface. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude retrieve and cite differently; an answer on one surface is not a promise about the others. Our surface-by-surface comparison covers the mechanics of that.

So “we do AEO” concretely means: for a defined set of questions your buyers actually ask, your brand is cited, mentioned, or at least not contradicted, across the surfaces where those questions get asked — and you can show the evidence.

AEO vs SEO, in one table

SEO AEO
System being optimized for A ranked results list A generated, cited answer
Unit of success A click on your result A cited sentence or brand mention
Primary inputs Relevance, links, site quality, engagement Extractability of passages, entity clarity, third-party corroboration, retrievability
Main failure mode Low rank or no rank Ranked (or not) but absent from the answer
How you measure Position, impressions, clicks Citation/mention presence per question, per surface

The rows are worth reading twice, because the last two are the ones that break existing teams: a site can hold #1 on Google and still be absent from AI answers about its own category — and the divergence is structural, not transitional. You rank #1 on Google. AI answers still skip you. is the full breakdown, including the CTR data on how much value the ranking side has lost.

Note what is not in the table: AEO is not “SEO plus a new tool.” The input sets overlap (content quality, structured data, technical reachability), but the deciding inputs on the AEO column — extractability, entity clarity, corroboration — are the ones classic tooling never scores.

What AEO is not

The term attracts three claims that don’t survive contact with how answer engines actually behave:

  • AEO is not a guarantee of appearances. No input set forces a citation. Google is explicit, for its own AI features, that meeting requirements does not mean content will be served (https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features); the same holds a fortiori for third-party engines whose selection logic is unpublished. Anyone selling you a guaranteed citation outcome is selling a promise, not a process.
  • AEO is not a separate asset from good content. There is no “AI version” of your website you build alongside the real one. The levers — specific, self-contained passages; unambiguous entity naming; third-party corroboration; clean retrievability — all live on the content and presences you already have. AEO is closer to a new lens on existing assets than a new asset class.
  • AEO is not an AI-traffic program. The referral traffic that flows from AI surfaces is real but small in absolute terms relative to search, and nobody can promise you a volume from it. The measurable outcome of AEO work is citation presence on your money questions, across named surfaces, with a diff you can audit month to month — not a traffic number with a forecast attached.

That last point is deliberate, because the sell in this space is usually inverted. The honest offer is: we make you citable where it matters, we measure it every month, and we show you the receipts. If a vendor’s AEO pitch leads with a traffic forecast, that is a flag.

Where this leaves you

Three things follow from the definition:

  1. Map the questions first. AEO is per-question, so the work starts with the set of questions your buyers ask — category, comparison, pricing, trust — not with a keyword list.
  2. Check your current presence before spending. Cited, mentioned, absent, or contradicted — per question, per surface. That snapshot is the baseline every other decision depends on.
  3. Treat the four levers as one system. Extractability, entity clarity, corroboration, retrievability — a gap in any one of them is invisible to your rank tracker. The full measurement and fix methodology is in our methodology, and the comparison to the research term is in what is GEO.
